Founded as a German museum in 1901 by mayor and businessman Wilhelm Ludwig. After 1945, his collections were looted and a large part of the objects was destroyed as a relic of German culture. It was re-founded as a regional museum in 1991 by the historian, archaeologist and pedagogue Mgr. Jiří Karel with the support of the town and a large number of volunteers.
